Utrecht
Etching, 1929, Rose 154 only state, 244 x 163 mm. Fine, strong impression on brown wove paper with good margins, signed and titled in pencil. This is one of the rarer of Drewes' prints, issued in an edition of 15 and the plate destroyed. Essentially a sketch on copper, it is preoccupied with strong contrasts of light and shadow and, while miles away from his meticulously drawn later prints, it does prefigure his work in architectural abstraction. Apart from the title, one might recognize the location only by the distinctive bell tower. Utrecht is an ancient city and Drewes allowed that to come through even in his search for other meanings.
