Vasari, Seven Bishop Saints

Seven Bishop Saints Attended by Putti with Scroll and Chalice

Brown ink, and wash with touches of white, over black chalk, 267 x 252 mm.. Finely-finished drawing on laid paper with an arched top; small losses backed. The figures are comparable in type to the saints that flank the altarpiece in SS Donato e Ilariano in the Monastery at Camaldoli, which Vasari began painting in 1539. The drawing style seems close to Francesco Salviati (1510-1563) of Vasari's circle. The drawing is not squared for transfer and is therefore probably a record rather than a working study. Another version of this subject, said to be by Vasari himself, was with Colnaghi's. All drawings are supplied in acid-free mats, most of them hand-painted French mats custom made to complement the particular drawing.
