Dürer: Virgin & Child

The Virgin and Child on the Crescent with Sceptre and Starry Crown

Engraving, 1516, 115 x 74 mm., Bartsch 32, Meder 37 a (of c). Superb impression on laid paper without visible watermark (as mentioned by Meder), with inky plate edges and thread margins almost all around. The tip of the upper right corner (blank paper) appears to have been restored. The crescent moon under the feet of Mary symbolizes chastity. Dürer engraved the subject four separate times from 1499 to 1516 (in addition to a woodcut) and it was obviously a favorite motif for him. Winkler feels this one to be the "most magnificent and tender" of the four.
