Embarcadère sur la Garonne, Bordeaux (Embarcation on the Garonne River, Bordeaux)

Etching and aquatint in colors, 1897, Lotz-Brissonneau 106, 320 x 370 mm. Fine impression of the completed plate, with the etched signature and the letters, on laid paper with large margins. The plate was specially commissioned by the Societé des Amis des Arts de Bordeaux, so the edition, unlike most of Lepère’s etchings, was large: 275 impressions before letters and 600 with letters. With the port of Bordeaux and sailing ships as a background, the prime figure, in elegant traveling dress, is Mme. Lepère, and if she seems to bear a resemblance to the lady in the preceding print, they may be one and the same, the child in the latter being their daughter, Suzanne. Lepère used color fairly frequently in his later woodcuts and sometimes in his lithographs, but only rarely in his etchings. It is most effective here.
