Original drawing in soft pencil on wove paper and the finished etching based on it, 1935 and 1936, 275 x 213 mm. and 250 x 200 mm. The etching, a fine impression on wove paper with margins, provenance: the artist’s family. Despite the Spanish name, Torre-Bueno was an American-born artist who lived and worked in and around New York City for most of his life. Subject to the expected difficulties of making a living as an artist during the Depression years, he eventually became a designer of custom-made elevators for the Otis Elevator Company. But he was fascinated by the city, the skylines, the places, the people and particularly by odd and unexpected views. This drawing and print were made from a vantage point at 180 West 89th Street.
