Virginie de Leyva

Titre pour "Virginie de Leyva," par Philippe Chasles (Title Page for "Virginie de Leyva" by Philippe Chasles)

Etching, 1860, 159 x 125 mm., Béraldi 376 i/ii, B. N. Inv. N.D. (lacking). Provenance: Samuel Isham (Lugt 1402); New York Public Library (duplicate). A fine, proof impression on chine-volant with full margins, signed (?) or inscribed in pencil. The plate actually contained two etchings for the book and this impression is from the uncut plate but without the second image; therefore, a platemark does not show at the right, though there is ample blank plate margin. The impression is in Béraldi's first state, before the title in the banderole but, in fact, there is a still earlier state, undescribed in the literature. The print is of the greatest rarity; Béraldi mentions six proof impressions in all of both the first and second states. The sub-title of the book is Intèrieur d'un Couvent de Femmes en Italie au XVIIIe Siècle (Inside a Women's Convent in Italy in the 18th Century), which must have been racier than one might guess, for the illustration shows a stormy night in the country with a nun being carried off bodily by a man while another nun kneels in prayer before a statue of the Virgin.
