L' Inconnu (The Unknown)
Etching and drypoint, 1862, 187 x 320 mm., Béraldi 174 iii/iii, B. N. Inv. 158. Fine, fresh impression on chine-appliqué with large margins; some dust and a little foxing at the outer edges of the support sheet. The etching was published as the first plate in the first album issued by the Societé des Aquafortistes and bears the number 1 at the upper right corner. This first published state, as printed by Delâtre, is a perfectly fine realization of the etching as there were only about a dozen proof impressions taken of the prior two states. Curiosity is not a trait usually associated with ducks, but if anyone would have observed (not to say, memorialized) such a scene, it would have been Bracquemond.
