Rowlandson, Loading a Cart for Market

Loading a Cart for Market

Watercolor and pen and brown ink, 140 x 232 mm.. Finished watercolor on thick paper laid down on an old decorative mount. A variant of this drawing is in the Mellon Center for British Art at Yale University (No, 93 in the Baskett & Snelgrove catalog). The two drawings are different in size, in the placement of the chickens, the background landscape, the inclusion of children at the window in the house in the Mellon drawing, etc. Both drawings are unsigned. Rowlandson frequently made two or more versions of his drawings, differing in small details.
