La Prière Interrompue

Tool-work engraving, in colors, ca. 1780, 313 x 257 mm., Portalis & Béraldi N.D., LeBlanc N.D. Fine impression with fresh and strong colors, printed on white wove paper with narrow margins or trimmed on the platemark, ample white space all around the borderline; a few small surface losses and scrapes, remains of old glue around the sheet edges, and added touches of blue crayon in the sky. The scene shows a young nun in a cloister, trees and sky visible over the wall, interrupted at prayer by a young gardener carrying a pot with a rose bush. There are already five other such pots within the courtyard. Another gardener on a ladder outside observes the scene. There is no text nor any letters or signature, so this may be a proof impression, but there is no catalogue-raisonné to explicate matters.
