Etching, drypoint and engraving, ca. 1658, B/R/S/ 282, Hind 269, Boon/White 282 vi/vi.260 x 192 mm., ex collections A. Firmin-Didot (Lugt 119), J. Peoli (L. 2020), Ralph King (L. 220). A superb impression of the completed state, after Rembrandt had experimented with different backgrounds and finally placed the large, black hemisphere on the wall at the right; on fine laid paper with narrow margins and in fresh condition. There were no Basan editions of the print, the Basan recueils containing a copy etched by Basan himself (an impression of the copy will be given to the purchaser of the Rembrandt print). Coppenol (1599-after 1667) was at one time master at the French school in Amsterdam. Calligraphy was his passion – he was said to be slightly mad -- and he gave traveling demonstrations of it. He is shown here with his grandson Antonius, whose apparent age helps to date the print.
