The Rest Before the Inn
Etching, ca. 1652, Bartsch 11, Dutuit 11 iii/iii, Hollstein 11 iii/iii. A fine impression of the third state with the number 4 at the lower right on laid paper with a foolscap watermark, with thread margins almost all around; a tiny marginal loss and thin areas on the left edge, and a tiny stain or touch of brown wash by the decanter.. The lady traveling on the donkey holds her glass upside down at the female innkeeper at the door, who grasps the decanter and smiles. Despite Berchem's nationality, the scene is almost certainly in Italy.
